Tardar Sauce, the original grumpy cat who won people's hearts in 2012, died in 2019.
In a recent NFT auction, community around the meme cryptocurrency Grumpy Cat managed to raise $70,000 in its first-ever charity drive.
The community behind the coin donated the funds to Sterling Animal Shelter in Massachusetts — a charity that provides medical care and shelter to stray, unwanted or neglected animals.
The Grumpy Cat NFT was based on a photo of internet star Tardar Sauce, the original grumpy cat that won people’s hearts back in 2012 when her picture was first posted online. She died in 2019.
With a frown unlike any other, she inspired the NFT named “Worst NFT Ever” which was auctioned on the Foundation NFT marketplace, closing at 44 ETH, which was roughly around $78,000 at the time.
The Foundation marketplace described the NFT token as an:
“Original remastered Grumpy Cat photographic image. This singular keepsake is available as a 1/1 authenticated edition NFT. Arguably the planet’s most famous feline, Grumpy Cat is a New York Times bestselling author, the star of her own Lifetime Christmas movie, and the first cat in history to be honored with a Madame Tussaud’s wax figure. Grumpy became a pop-cultural icon on September 23, 2012, after her frowning photo was posted to Reddit.”
A New Way for Charities to Accept Donations
The recently launched cat-themed coin was first listed on Uniswap at the beginning of the month. At the time of writing, the price has increased by about 20% in the past 24 hours, with a trading volume of $6 million.
The idea behind grumpy.finance is that holders of the $GRUMPY coin can earn rewards from the 1% transaction fee charged, which is then instantly redistributed into their wallets.
The community behind Grumpy Cat is the driving force behind its charity rallies, which focus on helping animal shelters.
The Sterling Animal Shelter website states that they accept donations in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which could pave the way for other charities to form partnerships with crypto platforms.
