Martin Shkreli infamously became known as "Pharma Bro" after increasing the price of a life-saving drug by 5,000% — and later ended up being jailed for seven years after being convicted of securities fraud.
But he's now been released from prison a year earlier than planned — and already, Shkreli is jumping into crypto-themed Twitter Spaces… indicating he has his sights set on the world of altcoins now he's free.
Over the weekend, the convicted felon revealed that he had started using Uniswap in prison — describing the decentralized exchange as "really cool."
And during another discussion on Monday, Shkreli described Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin as "brilliant" but "full of s***" — and argued that security, scalability and decentralization can be achieved simultaneously without resulting in one of them being compromised.
Despite the fact that he's banned from working in the pharma sector for life, Shkreli also seemed unrepentant about his past behavior. As chief executive of Turing Pharmaceuticals, he acquired Daraprim, a drug used for treating AIDS, malaria and cancer, and increased prices from $13.50 a tablet to $750.
Indicating that he hasn't learned his lesson or reflected all that much during his time behind bars, he said he didn't "really give a f***" and claimed such high prices are justified given many Americans have health insurance cover.
Condemnation as Shkreli Takes the Stage
A number of crypto enthusiasts have expressed their dismay that Shkreli is being given a platform on Twitter Spaces.
Back on Saturday — before he was criticized by Shkreli — Buterin had tweeted:
"How do we create a culture where it's harder to set (or become) the topic of public conversation by doing something terrible and easier to do so by doing something great?"
Meanwhile, zefram.eth — known as @boredgenius on Twitter — warned:
"Simping for evil pharma bro Martin Shkreli is gonna set a new low of the public perception of crypto. I find it morally problematic even as someone heavily into crypto."
Shkreli's new Twitter handle — @Enrique5060782 — has already been suspended by the social network, indicating that he might not be popping up on many Spaces anytime soon. It's unclear why.
