<p>MIT researchers, in collaboration with the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, have developed an innovative automated system that aims to address a critical question in human-AI collaboration: When should users trust the advice of an AI assistant? <p>2. <strong>Latent space representation:</strong> The collected data is embedded into a latent space, which groups similar data points together.</p> 
<p>3. <strong>Identifying collaboration errors:</strong> An algorithm identifies regions in the latent space where the human collaborates incorrectly with the AI. These regions represent situations where the human trusted the AI’s prediction, but the prediction was incorrect, and vice versa.</p> 
<p>4. <strong>Rule generation: </strong>A second algorithm uses a large language model to describe each region with natural language rules, iteratively fine-tuning them by finding contrasting examples. These rules form the basis for training exercises.</p> 
<p>5. <strong>Training exercises</strong>: The onboarding system presents examples to the user, such as images and AI predictions, and asks the user to make predictions. If the user’s predictions are incorrect, they receive the correct answer and performance statistics.</p> 
<p>6. <strong>Learning for future collaborations</strong>: Through this process, users learn how to collaborate effectively with AI by understanding the rules for when to trust the AI’s recommendations.</p> 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="effectiveness-of-onboarding-process">Effectiveness of onboarding process</h2> 
<p>The researchers conducted tests involving tasks such as detecting traffic lights in blurry images and answering multiple-choice questions from various domains. The results demonstrated that the onboarding process without recommendations significantly improved users’ accuracy by approximately 5 percent in the traffic light prediction task without slowing them down. However, onboarding was less effective for the question-answering task, possibly due to the AI model providing explanations with each answer.</p> 
<p>In contrast, providing recommendations without onboarding had a detrimental effect on user performance and decision-making speed. Users seemed to struggle when given recommendations alone, as it disrupted their thought process.</p> 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="future-research-and-expansion">Future research and expansion</h2> 
<p>The research team plans to conduct larger studies to assess both short- and long-term effects of the onboarding process. They also aim to leverage unlabeled data to enhance the onboarding process and explore methods to reduce the number of regions without excluding crucial examples.</p>
