 Sam Altman and OpenAI are currently in legal hot waters in the European Union. On Monday, April 29, the European Center for Digital Rights—the NOYB—lodged a complaint against the AI company, <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://noyb.eu/en/chatgpt-provides-false-information-about-people-and-openai-cant-correct-it">alleging</a> that the firm’s generative AI solution, ChatGPT, provides users with false information regarding individuals and the firm cannot rectify it.&nbsp;

NOYB stated that since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, there had been an “unprecedented AI hype” in the industry as people began using the chatbot for various reasons. The agency argued that while the firm has vast amounts of training data, there is presently no assurance that the chatbot is actually displaying factually correct information to users. 
According to the agency’s announcement, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation requires that all information regarding people is accurate and valid and that they possess full access to the information regarding the source. Also, the agency stated that ChatGPT had violated Article 16&nbsp; of this EU law, which requires that users have a right to rectification and can request that the data be deleted if the data provided is invalid.&nbsp; 
The government agency wrote that, in contrast to the legislation, OpenAI openly acknowledges that it is unable to correct incorrect information on ChatGPT. The NOYB accused OpenAI of not caring about its situation, stating that “though the firm is aware of the problem, it doesn’t appear to care, but rather argue that factual accuracy in LLMs (large language models)” is still an area of active research. 
This is not the first time OpenAI or its founder has been accused by government agencies. In December 2023, the <a href="https://defi-planet.com/2024/02/openai-under-scrutiny-over-claims-of-investor-misrepresentation-new-report/">US SEC subpoenaed the company’s current and previous leaders and board members regarding internal records</a>. This occurred after the firm fired its CEO, Sam Altman, over accusations of dishonesty in his communications with the firm’s board.&nbsp; 
Also, in June of the same year, <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://defi-planet.com/2023/06/openai-receives-cautionary-notice-from-japans-privacy-authority-over-data-collection-practices/">the firm received a cautionary notice from Japan’s</a> Privacy Authority regarding data collection practices. Notably, the regulator raised concerns that OpenAI collects and collates private information without acquiring proper consent from individuals.&nbsp;
