<p><a href="https://www.galaxy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Galaxy Digital</a> head of research Alex Thorn predicts the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may authorize spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Thorn speculated on May 21 that the SEC may be able to differentiate between Ethereum and staked Ethereum, maybe designating staked Ethereum as a security.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Spot Ethereum ETFs, which the SEC has so far been hesitant to approve, may be greatly impacted by this distinction. Thorn believes this shift in approach fits nicely with the SEC’s current litigation battles and probes.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The SEC might allow Ethereum ETFs while upholding its regulatory position if it made a distinction between ETH and staked ETH. This strategy, meantime, might also include particular limitations on spot Ethereum exchange traded funds.</p>
<p>The introduction of Ethereum ETFs might be made possible by the SEC’s careful handling of the complicated regulatory environment. This would happen while retaining a stringent regulatory framework for staked assets and other altcoins.</p>

<p>Following reports that the SEC may approve spot ETH ETFs, Ethereum saw a nearly 17% increase in value. There had been a consensus in the market previously that the SEC would not approve. Senior analyst Eric Balchunas of <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bloomberg</a> had already stated that there were little to no chances of spot Ethereum ETF approval.</p>
<p>However, on May 20, he <a href="https://cryptonewsland.com/ethereum-staking-participation-rate-soars-25-as-eth-surges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">increased the likelihood of approval</a> from 25% to 75%, suggesting that political pressure may be the reason for the SEC’s accelerated approval of the ETF.</p>
<p>This is a significant position shift for the agency, as prior to this, there was minimal interaction with ETF applicants. Possible approval of spot Ethereum ETFs <a href="https://cryptonewsland.com/bullish-early-eth-etf-approval-fuels-eth-price-rally-following-us-secs-request-for-exchanges-to-update-filings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">may have a big impact</a> on the cryptocurrency market. The SEC’s stance on digital assets would change as a result of it.</p>
