 The Bitcoin Core developers have unveiled a new policy focused on disclosing “critical bugs” in a move to improve the communication of Bitcoin security vulnerabilities.

This announcement came in <a href="https://groups.google.com/g/bitcoindev/c/Q2ZGit2wF7w" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">a message to the Bitcoin Development Mailing List</a> on July 3, where lead developer Antoine Poinsot and five others highlighted the need for better transparency.
Poinsot explained that the Bitcoin project has historically struggled with publicly disclosing security-critical bugs, whether reported externally or found by contributors. This lack of transparency has led to a misconception that Bitcoin Core is free of bugs, a notion Poinsot warns is dangerous and inaccurate.
As the essential software node operators use to access the Bitcoin blockchain, validate transactions, and build blocks, Bitcoin Core is crucial in securing over $1.1 trillion within the Bitcoin network.&nbsp;
The newly introduced policy aims to improve communication about the risks of running outdated Bitcoin Core versions and standardize the disclosure process, ultimately encouraging researchers to identify and responsibly report vulnerabilities.
The disclosure policy categorizes vulnerabilities into four severity levels: Low, Medium, High, and Critical, with the latter posing a threat to the entire network’s integrity.
Poinsot noted that vulnerabilities fixed in Bitcoin Core versions 0.21.0 and earlier have been disclosed as of July 3, with disclosures for versions 0.22.0 and 0.23.0 scheduled for later this month and August, respectively.
The policy received praise from fellow Bitcoin Core developer Eric Voskuil, who<a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://groups.google.com/g/bitcoindev/c/Q2ZGit2wF7w" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> remarked</a>,

</blockquote>
This new Bitcoin Core policy will be gradually implemented in the coming months to foster a more secure and transparent Bitcoin ecosystem.
