Bitcoin miners face mounting financial pressures following the recent halving, which cut block rewards from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. In response, a controversial proposal for a '<a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-miners-showcase-steady-hodl-patterns-marathon-leads-with-full-retention/">HODL</a> tax' has emerged, aiming to subsidize miners by taxing dormant Bitcoin addresses. This proposal has ignited fierce debate within the Bitcoin community, according to <a href="https://dailycoin.com/bitcoin-hodl-tax-relief-for-miners-or-diamond-hand-penalty/">Dailycoin</a>. 
The 'HODL tax' would levy a fee on Bitcoin addresses with no activity for a year. The fee, equal to 50% of the median transaction fee from the previous two weeks, would be redistributed to miners. Proponents argue it aligns incentives and supports network security. Critics, however, see it as a departure from Bitcoin's core principles and an unfair penalty on long-term holders. 
Prominent voices like Peter McCormack and Colin Talks Crypto have criticized the idea, emphasizing the need for market-driven solutions rather than imposed taxes. Despite the backlash, the proposal highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions to ensure Bitcoin's long-term viability amid declining mining revenues.
