According to data from cryptocurrency analysis platform Arkham, various governments around the world own significant amounts of cryptocurrencies.
Portfolios consisting largely of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are worth billions of dollars.
Recently, the US and German governments have come to the fore with large amounts of BTC sales, while these sales are Mt. Gox refunds and caused sharp declines in the market.
Following these sales, Arkham data revealed that many governments still hold significant amounts of Bitcoin, worth approximately $17.8 billion at current market prices.
According to Arkham data, while the USA, England and Germany have a significant amount of Bitcoin confiscated as a result of various criminal cases, El Salvador continues to purchase Bitcoin within the scope of the decision of 1 BTC every day.
The US government has the largest share in Bitcoin and holds 213,297K BTC worth approximately $12.21 billion. The US government also holds a small amount of Etheruem (ETH) in addition to BTC.
It remains unclear when future sales will occur from the U.S. government; because the government does not announce its plans in advance to prevent market manipulation.
The United Kingdom follows the USA. The UK government holds approximately $3.3 billion worth of Bitcoin.
The German government, which has come to the fore with Bitcoin sales in recent days, has 41,226K BTC worth 2.28 billion dollars.
Unlike other countries, El Salvador's Bitcoin treasury receives Bitcoin as part of a national BTC strategy launched by president Nayib Bukele.
El Salvador holds 5,802 BTC worth $321 million.
