 A new legislative effort led by U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) seeks to <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.commerce.senate.gov/services/files/3012CB20-193B-4FC6-8476-DDE421F3DB7A">tackle the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) deepfakes</a> by mandating the watermarking of such content.&nbsp;

The proposed bill, named the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act (COPIED), represents a proactive measure in addressing concerns surrounding the ethical use of AI, particularly in preventing the malicious manipulation of digital content. 
Senator Cantwell emphasised that the COPIED Act would provide essential transparency into AI-generated content. She highlighted its role in empowering creators, including local journalists, artists, and musicians, by putting them back in control of their content. 
If passed, the legislation would compel AI service providers, such as OpenAI, to ensure that users embed information detailing the origin of the content they generate. This information must be in a format that is “machine-readable” and resistant to removal or bypassing through AI-based tools. 
According to the bill, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) would oversee enforcement of the COPIED Act, treating violations as unfair or deceptive acts under the FTC Act. This regulatory oversight underscores the bill’s intent to safeguard against the deceptive dissemination of AI-generated media.

The introduction of AI technology has sparked ethical debates due to its capacity to collect extensive data from various online sources. These concerns have become apparent amidst rising concerns recently. A <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://defi-planet.com/2024/06/bitget-warns-of-rising-deepfake-scams-in-crypto-predicts-losses-to-reach-25-billion-by-end-of-2024/#google_vignette">new report from Bitget Research</a> noted that AI-powered deepfake scams have been on the rise in the cryptocurrency sector, with projected losses exceeding $25 billion by the end of 2024.&nbsp; 
The report revealed that the first quarter of 2024 alone saw $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency losses due to deepfakes, coinciding with a significant 217% growth in the crypto sector compared to Q1 2023.&nbsp;
