Texas is rapidly becoming a Bitcoin mining hub, butresidents of local towns are experiencing hearing issues, headaches, dizziness, and sleep disturbance.&nbsp;
The conflict between the economic interests of Bitcoin (BTC) <a href="https://crypto.news/bitcoin-miners-could-liquidate-5b-in-btc-post-halving/" data-type="link" data-id="https://crypto.news/bitcoin-miners-could-liquidate-5b-in-btc-post-halving/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mining</a> in Texas and the quality of life of its residents is escalating, underscoring the need for comprehensive policy solutions.
Texas is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/09/business/bitcoin-mining-electricity-pollution.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/09/business/bitcoin-mining-electricity-pollution.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">home</a> to 10 out of the 34 major Bitcoin mines in the United States. In 2021, when China decided to crack down on Bitcoin mining, numerous mining companies like <a href="https://crypto.news/tag/marathon-digital-holdings/" data-type="link" data-id="https://crypto.news/tag/marathon-digital-holdings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Marathon Digital</a> and Hut 8 moved to Texas due to its cost-effective power and access to renewable energy.&nbsp;
Texas appeals to Bitcoin miners due to its relatively low energy costs and <a href="https://crypto.news/texas-blockchain-council-and-riot-platforms-sue-us-federal-agencies-over-crypto-energy-scrutiny/" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://crypto.news/texas-blockchain-council-and-riot-platforms-sue-us-federal-agencies-over-crypto-energy-scrutiny/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">deregulated power grid</a>, which offers more flexibility and competitive pricing. Additionally, the state’s supportive regulatory environment and abundant renewable energy sources make it an attractive destination for mining operations.
On July 9, Hut 8 announced expansion into West Texas <a href="https://crypto.news/bitcoin-miner-hut-8-secures-205mw-site-in-texas-to-upgrade-its-capacity-to-1-3gw/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">citing</a> “some of the lowest locational wholesale power pricing in North America.”
However this influx of miners also has had adverse effects on the local residents.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="health-effects">Health effects</h2>
Residents in Texas have reported noise levels from Bitcoin miners as high as 91 decibels, according to <a href="https://time.com/6982015/bitcoin-mining-texas-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Time</a>. According to the <a href="https://hearinghealthfoundation.org/keeplistening/decibels" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Hearing Health Foundation</a>, sounds exceeding 70 decibels cause hearing damage over time.
This is comparable to the noise levels of a lawnmower or a chainsaw, and can potentially cause long-term ear damage. Some residents have been <a href="https://qz.com/bitcoin-mining-is-so-loud-in-texas-that-it-is-making-pe-1851584695" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">officially diagnosed</a> with hearing loss issues as a result of the noise.
Other reported health issues include a loss of sleep, dizziness, vertigo, dizziness, and fainting spells. These health issues can be especially prevalent among older residents.&nbsp;
