ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly building a new AI model called “Strawberry” to help its artificial intelligence tools reach human-level intelligence through advanced reasoning.
Strawberry would effectively scan the internet autonomously and reliably perform what OpenAI describes as “deep research,” allowing it to solve more complex real-world problems at scale, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/openai-working-new-reasoning-technology-under-code-name-strawberry-2024-07-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">according</a> to a July 12 report by Reuters.
This could involve anything from making major scientific discoveries to building new software applications, Reuters said after speaking with an OpenAI spokesperson, who added:

 “We want our AI models to see and understand the world more like we do. Continuous research into new AI capabilities is a common practice in the industry, with a shared belief that these systems will improve in reasoning over time.”

Strawberry aims to achieve this by conducting an extensive “post-training” analysis of OpenAI’s <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/what-is-gpt-4o-and-how-is-it-different-from-gpt-3-gpt-35-and-gpt-4">existing AI models</a> to craft more humanlike responses.

In January 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “The most important areas of progress will be around reasoning ability.”
Strawberry is still a work in progress, and it isn’t clear how close it is to being publicly available, Reuters said.
“How Strawberry works is a tightly kept secret even within OpenAI,” Reuters said in its discussion with the OpenAI spokesperson.
Strawberry extends on <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/outrage-chatgpt-wont-say-slurs-qstar-breaks-encryption-99-fake-web-ai-eye/">OpenAI’s Q* project</a> announced in November 2023, which several industry pundits <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/11/27/1083886/unpacking-the-hype-around-openais-rumored-new-q-model/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">described</a> as a technical breakthrough allowing for the development of “far more powerful artificial intelligence models.”

Meanwhile, earlier in July, technology giants Microsoft and Apple reportedly <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/microsoft-apple-withdraw-openai-board">withdrew their board seats</a> at OpenAI amid increasing regulatory scrutiny.
Altman’s firm also recently partnered with <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/openai-partners-los-alamos-bioscience-research">Los Alamos National Laboratory</a>&nbsp;— which built the world’s first nuclear weapon — to experiment with AI use in bioscience research.
