Google has reaffirmed its commitment to making AI helpful for businesses. The company reaffirmed its commitment at the AI in Action event which was held in Cape Town. The event was aimed at educating businesses about the usefulness and benefits of adopting Gemini, Google’s AI model, to scale up their operations in a constantly evolving landscape. 
Conversations at the event revolved around the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in various industries, including marketing, healthcare, and tourism. Speakers discussed the importance of minimizing fear associated with AI and opening up people’s aperture to its possibilities. They also highlighted the unique capabilities of AI, such as multimodal responses. 
Google said that it is committed to helping African businesses enhance operational efficiency and achieve their commercial goals using AI. Google’s Business Strategist for AI, Yvette Baez shared the company’s AI ideology succinctly: 
“AI has swiftly transformed from an intriguing concept into a powerful asset for businesses. Its capacity to stimulate economic growth and create unprecedented opportunities is undeniable. No longer confined to text-based interactions, AI now offers a multisensory experience, delivering information through visual, auditory, and even video formats. As such, our work in this area has focused on responsibly building helpful products and platforms that can assist businesses to improve and overcome their most pressing challenges – making otherwise static information, useful”, says Baez.

Notably, Baez introduced the acronym WINS (Words, Images, Numbers, Sounds) to illustrate AI’s versatility. “If you think about the applicability of AI through each of those four areas, you can start to think about the possibility of bringing it to life in everyday uses”, she explained. Examples of such images include planning trips and understanding culture. 
The Google team at the event announced that the company has expanded access to its AI models like Gemini 1.5 Pro in <a href="https://cloud.google.com/vertex-ai/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=emea-za-all-en-dr-bkws-all-all-trial-e-gcp-1707574&amp;utm_content=text-ad-none-any-DEV_c-CRE_691999690015-ADGP_Hybrid+%7C+BKWS+-+MIX+%7C+Txt+-+AI+And+Machine+Learning+-+Vertex+AI-KWID_43700079633104706-kwd-1426615675666-userloc_1028644&amp;utm_term=KW_google%20cloud%20vertex%20ai%20ml%20model-NET_g-PLAC_&amp;&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwhvi0BhA4EiwAX25uj0KymywVSaUWCP6SvhNO9iLeGdqV3mChzzpW0CyQ6ucLuNqe9kAb9hoCrG4QAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vertex AI&nbsp;</a> for cloud customers and developers, and Open Model <a href="https://ai.google.dev/gemma" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gemma</a>, designed to assist customers with various types of code. 
“We are so excited about the possibility of what AI is affording us, and tomorrow. We are sharing examples of brands and marketers locally that are doing an excellent job adopting and adapting both predictive and generative AI for business purposes”, she added.

Enhancements have also been made to Gemini for Google Workspace across its Gmail, Meet and Chat offerings where the AI can access and process information, allowing it to provide summaries, answer questions, and generate content based on personal documents. 
Gemini can now pull data from various Google services like Flights, Hotels, Maps, and YouTube, in addition to Workspace data, which is helpful for upwardly mobile business executives. 
With these, business owners now have the opportunity to engage a collaborative creative partner that can help them make business decisions faster and drive better performance. They can now use Gemini to execute various tasks, whether it’s research and information gathering, writing and content creation, operations and management, business strategy and planning or marketing and sales. 
The richness of Gemini is also reflected in its easy interaction feature. The AI solution now uses prompts which is different from asking questions on Search. Gemini assimilates prompts as a science and an art and can present responses with sight, sounds, images and videos. 
Upgrading <a href="https://cloud.google.com/products/gemini/code-assist" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gemini Code Assist</a> will also help customers code more efficiently, and identify and resolve security threats.

Additionally, speakers discussed the ability of AI tools like Gemini to address real-world issues like flood forecasting and healthcare disparities.

From assisting farmers with frequent, precise, and actionable food security predictions to providing more accurate information for mitigating riverine flood disasters and empowering advertisers with tools to generate more product recommendations in various contexts and scenarios, African businesses are being empowered to address real-world challenges through the use of AI. 
Similarly, the Google team emphasized Gemini’s capacity to summarize long documents, including the Finance Bill 2024 and provide information validated by authoritative sources on politics and elections.
