David Plouffe, who worked as an adviser for Alchemy Pay and cryptocurrency exchange Binance, is reportedly joining Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’ 2024 United States presidential campaign.
According to an Aug. 2 Politico report, the Harris campaign <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/08/02/plouffe-joins-harris-campaign-as-senior-adviser-00172478" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">onboarded</a> several senior advisers, including Plouffe. A former campaign manager and senior adviser for US President Barack Obama, Plouffe made forays into the crypto space after leaving the White House in 2013. He <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/binance-establishes-global-advisory-board-to-work-on-regulatory-and-political-issues">joined Binance’s Global Advisory Board</a> in 2022 — reportedly later disbanded — and was a global strategic adviser for Alchemy Pay in 2023.
It’s unclear whether Plouffe’s reported role will involve advising the campaign on crypto and blockchain. On Aug. 2, the Democratic National Committee <a href="https://x.com/TheDemocrats/status/1819427216201019854" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">announced</a> that Vice President Harris had secured enough delegates to become the party’s official candidate in 2024, but she would not <a href="https://x.com/KamalaHarris/status/1819426800264474793" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">accept</a> the nomination until “next week.”
<h2 id="campaigning-on-crypto">Campaigning on crypto?</h2>
Only 12 days old, the Harris campaign’s position on crypto was still unclear at the time of publication. Representatives will reportedly meet with crypto industry leaders on Aug. 5 for a roundtable in Washington, DC. However, the campaign’s social media team also <a href="https://x.com/KamalaHQ/status/1819370618992660552" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">highlighted</a> Republican nominee Donald Trump’s suggestion to use Bitcoin (<a href="https://cointelegraph.com/bitcoin-price">BTC</a>) to fix US debt in an Aug. 2 X post:

Plouffe reportedly joined the Harris campaign as many Democrats called on the US vice president to <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/democrats-kamala-harris-crypto-platform-elections">consider a running mate</a> who could potentially change public perception of the party on crypto. Harris is expected to announce her vice presidential pick by Aug. 6, with leading contenders including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Other White House officials under Joe Biden have reportedly moved to support Harris since the US President announced on July 21 that he would not seek reelection. Biden adviser Anita Dunn, who attended a roundtable with crypto industry representatives and US lawmakers in July, will reportedly <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/lawmakers-biden-adviser-crypto-leaders-roundtable">join a Democratic-focused</a> political action committee.
