U.S.-listed bitcoin mining and data center operator Iris Energy experienced a sharp increase in electricity costs in July, reaching over $60,000 per bitcoin mined. This surge in costs presents significant challenges for the company's mining operations, as it attempts to balance rising expenses with consistent production, according to <a href="https://theminermag.com/news/2024-08-06/iren-bitcoin-electricity-spike/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">TheMinerMag</a>.
In its recent production update, Iris Energy reported mining 222 bitcoins in July. The company earned an average revenue of $61,306 per bitcoin, while electricity costs soared to $61,677 per bitcoin. This sharp rise represents a 56% increase compared to June, primarily driven by higher energy hedge pricing at its Childress, Texas, site during the summer months.
The increase in electricity costs marks a significant departure from Iris Energy's previous performance. In August 2023, the company benefited from favorable trading conditions that led to a net electricity cost of negative $0.08 per kilowatt-hour.
Despite these challenges, Iris Energy maintained a steady production rate in July. The company mined 222 bitcoins and 13 bitcoin equivalents from power sales, achieving a realized hashrate of 9.57 exahashes per second (EH/s) and an installed hashrate of 10.5 EH/s at the end of the month. This consistent output demonstrates Iris Energy's resilience in the face of escalating costs.
In addition to its mining operations, Iris Energy reported AI cloud servicing revenue of $1.2 million in July, up from $1.08 million in June. This growth in cloud services highlights the company's efforts to diversify its revenue streams and mitigate the impact of rising electricity costs.
