Meta and Universal Music Group (UMG) have entered an agreement that expands monetization opportunities for UMG artists’ music on Meta’s social media platforms. The deal includes licensing music used in short-form videos on new platforms.
The revamped licensing agreement between the two allows the use of UMG content to extend to other Meta platforms like WhatsApp and Threads, which was launched last year. According to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/12/24218501/meta-umg-whatsapp-threads-licensing-agreement" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">The Verge</a>, this also includes other platforms like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and Meta Horizon.

According to Meta, the partnership between Meta, UMG, and Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) will enable the firms to collaborate “in new ways on WhatsApp, and more.”
Although the companies have not revealed the finer details of the deal, they have indicated it’s a multifaceted partnership that will solve the scourge of unauthorized AI-generated content, which is one of the thorny issues affecting artists and songwriters today.
“We are delighted that Meta shares our artist-centric vision for respecting human creativity and compensating artists and songwriters fairly,” said UMG’s chief digital officer Michael Nash.

Under the new agreement, Meta will for the first time, license UMG artists’ music and UMPG songwriters for WhatsApp. Meta <a href="https://qz.com/meta-universal-music-group-agreement-whatsapp-ai-licens-1851619335" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">already</a> licenses music for its other social media platforms like Facebook.

UMG is a leading music company representing global stars such as Elton John, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Bad Bunny. The music company had its initial deal with Meta, then Facebook, in 2017, which made UMG the first music firm to authorize use of its music on Facebook’s social media platforms.
Now, the new deal expands to ensure that artists also get a fair share of earnings from their creations.
“The new agreement reflects the two companies’ shared commitment to protecting human creators and artistry, including ensuring that artists and songwriters are compensated fairly,” the companies said.
Meta’s VP of music and content business development, Tamara Hrivnak, added that the partnership “builds on the recognition that music can help connect us and bring fans, artists, and songwriters together.” Hrivnak said this goes beyond established platforms like Facebook and Instagram but also extends to “new ways on WhatsApp and more.”
For UMG, this is not a new initiative. Earlier this year, UMG announced it inked another social media licensing <a href="https://www.universalmusic.com/universal-music-group-and-tiktok-announce-new-licensing-agreement/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">deal with TikTok</a>, after there was intense tension between the two firms.
