Yat Siu, chairman of Animoca Brands, has been closely observing the current competition between non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and meme coins. Both digital assets are battling for the limelight, but Siu’s insights suggest that NFTs, with their unique, non-fungible nature, might hold a key role in the future of Web3. Moreover, the upcoming U.S. presidential election could significantly influence the direction of the crypto industry.

Influencers and celebrities, who once flocked to NFTs, are now increasingly drawn to meme coins as a way to express their digital personas. This shift is reflective of a broader trend in digital culture, where what’s popular today might be overshadowed by something else tomorrow. 
Siu highlighted this change, noting that three years ago, countless NFT projects were being launched daily. Today, that same energy is being directed towards meme coins. However, he believes that the cycle will eventually come full circle, with NFTs regaining their importance, particularly in terms of digital reputation. “What will become more important for your reputation, not for money? NFTs,” he remarked.

“One of the problems right now we have in Web3 is that too many people are only thinking about the economic capital, and they haven’t yet fully identified their Web3 persona as a reputation,” Siu stated. He sees NFTs as the perfect tool for establishing this reputation layer within the blockchain, offering a unique and non-fungible way for individuals to define their digital identities.

While NFTs and meme coins vie for dominance, another significant event could have a major impact on the crypto industry: the <a href="https://polymarket.com/elections" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">2024 U.S. presidential election</a>. Siu believes that the election’s outcome will play a critical role in shaping the future of cryptocurrency in the United States. 
“Come November, the U.S. is going to aim to reclaim leadership in crypto,” Siu predicted. He laid out two possible scenarios: If Donald Trump wins, the U.S. could take a bold, aggressive approach to crypto development. However, if Kamala Harris is victorious, the approach may be more measured, though still potentially supportive of the industry. 
Siu remains optimistic that a positive shift in U.S. crypto policy could reignite venture capital activities, which have been relatively subdued since the FTX collapse. Such a revival could lead to increased capital flow and stronger interactions between Web3 industries in the U.S., Asia, and beyond. “In Web3, every token holder is an investor,” Siu said. “So imagine that all of America now is becoming more open to crypto… This basically opens up a whole new form of liquidity.”

Beyond the immediate challenges and opportunities in the crypto world, Animoca Brands is also looking ahead to its long-term growth. Siu mentioned that an initial public offering (IPO) could take place in Hong Kong or the Middle East by late 2025, although 2026 appears to be a more realistic target.
