The 1999 China-Thailand Extradition Treaty has yielded significant achievement with the extradition of Zhang Moumou from Thailand to China.&nbsp; 
This operation highlights a crucial moment in global efforts to combat economic crimes, particularly those related to cryptocurrencies. After a lengthy chase, the arrival was announced by the local authorities on August 20. 
Leading the notorious MBI Group, Zhang has escaped capture since 2020. Since 2012, this gang has been operating an elaborate pyramid scheme with over 10 million participants and over 100 billion yuan in transactions. The promise of large gains, contingent on new investments and recruits, drew participants in.&nbsp;

The scheme required fees from members ranging significantly, from 700 to 245,000 yuan. The vast network and intricate operations made Zhang a prime target for Chinese law enforcement.&nbsp; 
The Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau initiated a formal investigation into Zhang and the MBI Group in November 2020, with Interpol issuing a red notice by March 2021. 
Zhang’s apprehension in Thailand on July 21, 2022, by local authorities marked a crucial step in the extradition process, solidified by the Thai Court of Appeal’s May 2024 ruling favoring his extradition.&nbsp; 
The Thai government confirmed this decision on August 14, facilitating his prompt return to China for trial. 
The Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, and Thai law enforcement coordinated to make this extradition successful. The operation is a component of China’s “Fox Hunting Operation,” which aims to combat financial crimes committed internationally.&nbsp;
