LayerZero, a leading cross-chain protocol, <a href="https://x.com/alphaskout/status/1833078557213352269" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">recently made headlines</a> with its successful airdrop of the native ZRO token. Unlike Starknet and ZKsync, LayerZero’s airdrop stood out for its strong anti-bot measures and focus on rewarding real users.&nbsp;
Recently at the Korea Blockchain Week, LayerZero’s CEO, Bryan Pellegrino, explained that their airdrop included a “big Sybil hunt” to block bots and ensure that only genuine and dedicated users received tokens.&nbsp;
LayerZero airdropped its native <a href="https://www.binance.com/en-IN/square/post/10161949971010" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ZRO token </a>on June 20, 2024. The token entered the market at $4.40, and although it has seen a 23% price decline since then, it still performed better than Starknet’s STRK token and ZKsync’s ZK token.&nbsp;
Both of these tokens, launched by airdrop earlier in 2024 experienced more significant price drops. Starknet’s token plummeted by 91%, and <a href="https://thenewscrypto.com/scroll-completes-curie-upgrade-preparing-for-upcoming-token-and-airdrop-launch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ZKsync’s airdrop</a> token fell by 67%.
A key reason for ZRO’s resilience lies in LayerZero’s strict Sybil filtering. Sybil attacks occur when bots or fake accounts try to claim airdropped tokens, leading to price drops and market instability.&nbsp;

In contrast, <a href="https://thenewscrypto.com/starknet-airdrop-to-be-live-next-week-what-to-expect/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Starknet’s token launch</a> was affected by accusations of “airdrop squatters,” individuals who manipulated systems like GitHub to claim large sums of STRK tokens unfairly.&nbsp;
This lack of <a href="https://thenewscrypto.com/layerzero-labs-pauses-sybil-bounty-hunter-initiative-amid-challenges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Sybil filtering</a> led to a steep drop in the token’s value, with Starknet’s user activity also declining sharply. Similarly, ZKsync’s airdrop faced criticism for not filtering out bots effectively, leading to a 67% price drop in the ZK token.
Despite some backlash over requiring a small donation for users to claim their airdropped tokens, <a href="https://thenewscrypto.com/layerzero-identifies-over-800k-potential-sybil-addresses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">LayerZero</a>’s focus on rewarding loyal users has paid off. The project’s careful planning and attention to bot filtering allowed the ZRO token to maintain more value compared to Starknet’s and ZKsync’s tokens.&nbsp;
The success of LayerZero’s airdrop shows the importance of targeting real users and preventing bot-driven claims, especially in a competitive market.
