At the Ethereum Singapore 2024 conference, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, emphasized the crucial role of individual staking in enhancing the security and decentralization of the Ethereum network.

During his speech, Buterin highlighted that solo stakers, who independently stake Ethereum (ETH) without relying on third-party services or centralized entities, are critical in reducing dependence on centralized players and ensuring Ethereum’s long-term resilience. 
Buterin warned about the potential risks posed by centralized staking services and large staking pools, which could threaten the network’s decentralization. He explained that individual stakers play a crucial defensive role against network attacks, particularly 51% attacks, where a malicious entity could control the majority of the blockchain’s computational power.

Individual staking adds an extra layer of decentralization, making it more difficult for any single entity to gather enough power to disrupt the network. Buterin suggested that Ethereum’s current two-thirds block finality threshold should be raised to a higher level, such as three-quarters, to further mitigate the risk of such attacks.

Aside from Ethereum’s security, Buterin also commented on Google’s controversial automatic login feature, which recently sparked debate within the crypto community. While acknowledging the risks of using centralized services to access secure systems, Buterin argued that this feature could be beneficial if combined with secure models like account abstraction. 
Buterin’s proposals aim to strengthen Ethereum’s network security while addressing concerns around centralization and third-party services.
