OpenAI, an&nbsp;artificial intelligence&nbsp;developer of some of the most powerful AI models, is struggling to generate profits.

OpenAI is projected to incur a loss of about $5 billion in 2024, with losses potentially reaching as high as $14 billion by 2026. The company has experienced rapid growth, particularly in large language models (LLMs) and generative AI. OpenAI’s flagship models, GPT-3 and GPT-4, have transformed natural language processing. Still, the expenses of maintaining the infrastructure and data required to support these models are significant.

Most of OpenAI’s financial losses stem from heavy investments in cloud computing resources, AI research and the necessary infrastructure to sustain expansive projects. As more businesses integrate AI into their operations, OpenAI must continually upgrade its models and support systems to remain competitive.
OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft for its Azure cloud computing services has been a vital factor in making its operations sustainable, but it is also one of the key cost drivers.
<h2 id="growing-investments">Growing investments</h2>
Despite the costs, the company continues to grow, and so does interest in investing in it. The most recent figures came after OpenAI announced another successful funding round on Oct. 2.&nbsp;
The AI developer said it <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/openai-raises-6-6-billion-157-billion-valuation" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">raised another $6.6 billion from investors</a>, bringing its total valuation to $157 billion. The funding may “accelerate progress” in its mission.&nbsp;

This growth is driven by its enterprise solutions and increased licensing of AI technologies.&nbsp;

Still, OpenAI is not alone in its quest for AI supremacy.&nbsp;
The race to develop cutting-edge AI has attracted big players like <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/apple-google-ai-dominance-cathie-wood-ark" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">Google DeepMind, Anthropic and others</a>, all competing for leadership in the space. 
This competition puts additional pressure on OpenAI to invest even more in talent acquisition, research and development and infrastructure to maintain its edge.
