<p class="has-drop-cap">The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that inflation rose more than anticipated in September, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s efforts to manage economic growth. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf" target="_blank" aria-label="increased 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis (opens in a new tab)" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="deco-link">increased 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis</a>, pushing the annual inflation rate to 2.4%, slightly above economists’ forecasts.</p>
<h3 id="food-and-shelter-drive-cpi-increase">Food and Shelter Drive CPI Increase</h3>
<p>The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, climbed 0.3% for the month and 3.3% year-over-year, both 0.1 percentage point higher than expected. <br><br>Food prices saw a 0.4% monthly increase, while energy costs declined 1.9%, following a 0.8% drop in August. Shelter expenses, a significant component of the index, rose by 0.2%.</p>
<p>Food and shelter costs were the primary drivers of September’s inflation, accounting for over 75% of the monthly increase. In a notable shift, used car prices, which had been declining, increased by 0.3%.</p>

<p>Additionally, the labor market showed signs of cooling, with jobless claims reaching a 14-month high.
