Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin has converted another $1.6 million worth of memecoins into Ether, furthering his pledge to donate the proceeds to charitable causes. Among the coins offloaded were $982,800 worth of Moo Deng (MOODENG), $231,000 of Monsterra (MSTR), and $183,000 from Ethereum Is Good (EBULL), <a href="https://x.com/spotonchain/status/1845269148370350238" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">according</a> to blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain.
Buterin’s memecoin sales, reported on October 13, mark the latest in a series of conversions he has made, totaling $2.78 million over the last nine days.
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-charitable-stance-of-span-span-style-font-weight-400-vitalik-buterin-span">Charitable Stance of Vitalik Buterin </h2>
<a href="https://thecoinrise.com/vitalik-buterin-donates-another-100-eth-to-tornado-cash-developers-legal-defense/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Buterin’s charitable stance</a> toward these memecoins has drawn praise from the crypto community. In a recent X post, he <a href="https://x.com/VitalikButerin/status/1843260976206082216" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">acknowledged</a> the generosity of memecoin issuers but encouraged them to consider donating directly to worthy causes rather than sending tokens to him.
In early October, Buterin announced that he would donate 10 billion memecoins he received to an organization dedicated to anti-airborne-disease technology. Earlier this year, in August, he directed another donation of memecoins—<a href="https://thecoinrise.com/rival-memecoin-shib-surpasses-doge-market-cap/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">primarily animal-themed coins</a>—to the Effective Altruism Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund, reinforcing his long-standing belief that memecoins, despite their often frivolous nature, can be harnessed to fund meaningful public projects.
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-future-donations-span">Future Donations</h2>
While Buterin has already donated $884,000 in the last nine days alone, his philanthropic efforts show no signs of slowing down. His current crypto portfolio, valued at over $700 million, still contains $2.4 million in MOODENG tokens, $144,000 in Neiro (NEIRO), $117,000 in MSTR, and $80,000 in Degen (DEGEN), according to Spot On Chain’s data.
These remaining holdings suggest that <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/crypto-donations-to-rise-above-10b-in-10-years-report/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">further crypto donations may be imminent</a>, in line with Buterin’s philosophy of using memecoins for social good.
However, Buterin has expressed disdain for memecoins that center around celebrities and self-enrichment, criticizing their lack of societal benefit.
As his contributions to the crypto space and beyond continue, Buterin has even been floated as a potential nominee for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, on their podcast, lauded Buterin’s innovations, especially his work on Ethereum’s proof-of-stake mechanism, as reasons for his possible Nobel candidacy.
