<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">After exposing significant cracks in widely employed cryptographic algorithms, Chinese scientists claim to have crafted a breakthrough and hacked such encryptions by utilizing the power of quantum computing; it has troubled many about how secure our data is. The research team, which was led by Wang Chao at Shanghai University and employed a D-Wave quantum computer to crack encryption algorithms, also prompted queries surrounding the strength of contemporary encryption methods in industries including banking and cryptocurrency.</p>

This approach contrasts traditional computing that investigates all potential solutions and involves quantum tunnelling, where the particles can pass through barriers to quickly solve problems stumping other computers. This is the first time, Wang’s team says, that a quantum computer has “shown real and concrete danger to multiple SPN algorithms”.</p> 
<h2 id="strong-implications-for-banking-and-cryptocurrency-strong"><strong>Implications for Banking and Cryptocurrency</strong></h2> 
<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">The triumph of this quantum attack faints the waves of worry in encryption-dependent industries, notably banking and cryptocurrencies. This means that if popular encryption technologies such as AES-256 could be compromised, extremely important data remains vulnerable. This system would still ensure the security of most funds from being spent but demonstrates that operations should be ready for a quantum future.</p> 
<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">Buterin emphasised that the infrastructure for this kind of hard fork could begin development immediately, underscoring the need for the crypto community to address these concerns proactively.</p>

The researchers at Shanghai University, meanwhile, did not fully decode any passcode during their tests, but they came closer than ever using a quantum computer.</p> 
<p>Most researchers concur that, as quantum technology improves, the chances of more powerful attacks will improve to some degree, which, in turn, may render current cryptographic systems insecure. A race is on to develop post-quantum cryptography: new encryption schemes that are secure against an attack by a quantum computer. Quantum-safe encryption algorithms are being defined and standardised, with work by organisations like NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) just one example in this area.</p>
