 Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has introduced fresh perspectives on “The Verge,” the next milestone in Ethereum’s evolution, aimed at boosting the network’s decentralization and accessibility.

In a<a href="https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/10/23/futures4.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> recent blog post,</a> Buterin noted that running an Ethereum node now requires high-end hardware and that poses a barrier for many potential participants. While it’s possible to run a node on standard laptops, He acknowledged that it’s difficult without significant computational power.
The Verge was originally planned to solve this issue through the introduction of “Verkle Trees”, a cryptographic structure that supports compact proofs and enables stateless validation of Ethereum blocks. This would drastically reduce the storage and resource demands of running a node, allowing users with average devices, even mobile phones, to contribute to network security.&nbsp;
Buterin noted that the long-term objective is to encourage stateless validation, minimize storage requirements and integrate advanced technologies like SNARKs (Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge) to maintain scalability and decentralization. By lowering the technical barriers, more individuals will be able to run nodes, significantly enhancing the decentralization of the network.
Buterin also hoped that “The Verge” would set a new benchmark for Layer 2 (L2) networks, which are typically lighter than Ethereum’s main chain. He envisions that L2 protocols will follow Ethereum’s trajectory as it leads in promoting decentralization and thus strengthen the ecosystem as a whole.

According to him, seamless communication and interaction between L2s are crucial for Ethereum’s future scalability and functionality. His vision aims for a cohesive ecosystem, where users can effortlessly move assets and data between different L2 solutions, further advancing Ethereum’s usability and decentralized architecture.
