Detroit is set to become the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrency for tax and fee payments.&nbsp; 
Starting mid-2025, residents can use crypto to make payments through a platform managed by PayPal, Detroit officials <a href="https://detroitmi.gov/news/detroit-become-largest-city-us-accept-cryptocurrency-payments-taxes-other-fees" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">announced</a> today. 
This initiative aligns with the city’s plan to adopt new technologies to improve public services and promote economic growth.&nbsp;Michigan has been taking a pro-crypto turn recently, with the State of Michigan Retirement System <a rel="" href="https://crypto.news/michigan-adds-6-6m-in-bitcoin-etfs-to-pension-fund/">investing</a> $6.6 million in ARK 21Shares’ ARKB spot Bitcoin ETF. 
According to its officials, Detroit wants to create a more tech-friendly environment — for both residents and <a href="https://crypto.news/tag/blockchain" target="_blank">blockchain</a> entrepreneurs interested in contributing to civic solutions. 
“Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “We’re excited to allow residents to use cryptocurrency as a payment option.” 
Detroit’s Treasurer, Nikhil Patel, said that this crypto-payment option is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s payment system. The Treasurer’s Office hopes the platform upgrade will make payments more accessible, especially for those without traditional banking services.

Alongside this rollout, Detroit is inviting blockchain innovators to pitch ideas for blockchain applications that could enhance city services. Proposals should address potential benefits for city residents, including transparency and data security. 
With this move, Detroit joins states like <a href="https://crypto.news/colorado-becomes-the-latest-us-state-to-allow-residents-to-pay-tax-in-bitcoin/" target="_blank">Colorado</a>, Utah, and Louisiana in accepting crypto for public payments.
