A student in the United States received a chilling response from Google’s artificial intelligence chatbot Gemini when he asked for help with an assignment for college.&nbsp;
The Michigan college student received the threatening response while <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://gemini.google.com/share/6d141b742a13" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">conversing</a> with <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/four-things-google-gemini-users-can-do-soon" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">Gemini</a> about challenges and solutions for aging adults while researching data for a gerontology class.
The large language model <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/how-to-train-an-ai-bot-to-day-trade-crypto" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">chatbot</a> provided balanced and informative responses to the questions posed by student Vidhay Reddy, until it took a twisted turn at the end when it responded:&nbsp;

The entire chat transcript was saved using a feature that enables users to store conversations they’ve had with the chatbot. Earlier this year, Google updated its privacy policy for Gemini, <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/13/24072389/google-gemini-will-hang-onto-your-chats-for-up-to-three-years" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">noting</a> that it can retain chats for up to three years.&nbsp;
The 29-year-old grad student <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/google-ai-chatbot-threatening-message-human-please-die/" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">told</a> CBS News he was deeply shaken by the experience, adding, “This seemed very direct. So it definitely scared me for more than a day, I would say.”
Reddy’s sister, who was with him at the time, said they were “thoroughly freaked out” before adding, “I wanted to throw all of my devices out the window. I hadn’t felt panic like that in a long time, to be honest,”
“I think there’s the question of liability of harm. If an individual were to threaten another individual, there may be some repercussions or some discourse on the topic,” said Reddy, who added that tech companies should be held accountable.&nbsp;

Google told CBS News it was an isolated incident, stating that “Large language models can sometimes respond with nonsensical responses, and this was an example of that. This response violated our policies and we’ve taken action to prevent similar outputs from occurring.”

In October, the mother of a teen who committed suicide <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://www.inc.com/kit-eaton/mother-of-teen-who-died-by-suicide-sues-ai-startup/90994040" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">sued</a> AI startup Character.AI, alleging that her son became attached to a character created by the AI, which encouraged him to take his life.&nbsp;
In February, it was <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://futurism.com/microsoft-copilot-alter-egos" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">reported</a> that Microsoft’s chatbot <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/dumbed-down-google-microsoft-artificial-intelligence-ai-presidential-elections" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">Copilot</a> became oddly threatening, displaying a godlike persona when fed with certain prompts.&nbsp;
