Sui, a decentralized layer-1 blockchain designed for rapid smart contract deployment, experienced a significant outage on Nov. 21, halting block production for more than an hour.
The <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/sui-blockchain-explained-is-it-the-future-of-decentralized-networks" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">Sui blockchain</a> went down with no blocks being produced for more than an hour, <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://suivision.xyz/" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">according</a> to data from the Sui Network explorer, SuiVision.
According to the data, the last block occurred at 9:15 am UTC, with no new blocks produced afterward.

Multiple industry observers reacted to the downtime, with many outlining Sui’s ambitions to be <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/sui-could-be-solana-fiercest-competitor-k33-research" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">one of the biggest competitors to Solana</a> (<a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/solana-price-index" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">SOL</a>), which is the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

And they claimed to be a Solana Killer,” crypto YouTuber Ajay Kashyap <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/EverythingAjay/status/1859538961464533471" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" text="null" title="https://x.com/EverythingAjay/status/1859538961464533471">wrote</a> on X.

The downtime also impacted Sui (<a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/sui-price-index" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="https://cointelegraph.com/sui-price-index">SUI</a>), the blockchain’s native cryptocurrency, which fell nearly 11%, <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/sui" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">according</a> to data from CoinGecko. Still, it was trading at about $3.40 and was still up around 75% over the past 30 days.

Some major exchanges also reacted to the issue on the Sui blockchain. South Korean crypto exchange Upbit temporarily <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://upbit.com/service_center/notice?id=4660" rel="null" target="null" text="null" title="null">halted</a> SUI deposits and withdrawals, citing network issues.
The Sui Foundation took to X to <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/SuiNetwork/status/1859557679909204365" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" text="null" title="https://x.com/SuiNetwork/status/1859557679909204365">announce</a> the outage about two hours following the block production halt, stating that the network is currently experiencing an outage and not processing transactions.

“We’ve identified the issue, and a fix will be deployed shortly,” the foundation noted.

<h2 id="a-dos-bug-behind-the-outage">A DOS bug behind the outage?</h2>
According to some cryptocurrency security firms, the outage on the Sui blockchain was likely due to a DOS bug on its system.
“After our analysis, it was found that the Sui Network node occurred DOS due to integer overflow,” Web3 security company ExVul said in an X post.

<h2 id="sui-is-back-online-after-two-hours-of-downtime">Sui is back online after two hours of downtime</h2>
After a two-hour outage, the Sui Foundation took to X to <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/SuiNetwork/status/1859569509687849469" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" text="null" title="https://x.com/SuiNetwork/status/1859569509687849469">announce</a> that Sui is back up and processing transactions again “thanks to swift work from the incredible community of Sui validators.”
According to the foundation, the downtime was caused by a bug in transaction scheduling logic that caused validators to crash, which has now been resolved.
Amid the Sui network getting back online, the price of SUI has almost removed its daily losses at the time of writing, trading at around $3.60, according to CoinGecko.
<h2 id="first-major-outage-on-sui">“First major outage on SUI”</h2>
According to Tim Kravchunovsky, founder and CEO of Sui-based decentralized telecommunications network Chirp, Sui has only previously experienced issues on testnet.
“In March and June 2024, the testnet network went down for a few hours while in July, we saw a few RPC nodes go out, which again was fixed in about 1.5 hours,” Kravchunovsky told Cointelegraph.
“But this is the first major outage we have experienced,” he noted, adding:
