The Sui blockchain, a decentralized layer-1 network designed for rapid smart contract deployment, encountered a major outage on November 21, halting block production for over an hour. According to data from the Sui Network Explorer, SuiVision, the network stopped producing blocks at 09:15 UTC and had not recovered &nbsp;for over 1 hour and 15 minutes. 
Despite the disruption, the official Sui Network website displayed all systems as operational, sparking frustration and confusion within the community. 
The outage has raised concerns among industry observers and users, with speculation pointing to potential validator problems as the cause. Notably, Upbit, a major South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, temporarily paused SUI deposits and withdrawals, citing network issues. 
Meanwhile, SUI, the blockchain’s native cryptocurrency, experienced an 11% drop in value, trading at $3.43 according to CoinGecko, though it remains up 75% over the past month. 
Community members have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction, with some comparing Sui’s downtime to previous outages on Solana’s blockchain. Crypto YouTuber Ajay Kashyap commented, “SUI blockchain is down. And they claimed to be a Solana Killer.” These comparisons have reignited discussions about Sui’s positioning as a competitor to Solana, one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. 
The incident also served as a reminder of Ethereum’s enduring relevance, with its proven track record of reliability and stability. As one observer remarked, “This is why Ethereum is still relevant!” The challenges newer blockchains face in achieving similar resilience have put networks like Sui under intense scrutiny. 
In response to the outage, the Sui team stated on X that they had identified the cause, with a fix expected to be deployed shortly.

In addition, a Sui Foundation spokesperson later clarified the cause and response in a statement shared with Unlock Blockchain:

 “On the morning of November 21, 2024, Sui experienced its first network outage due to a bug in congestion control code, which had been recently upgraded to allow for better shared object utilization. Sui contributors quickly deployed a fix restoring normal network activity in two and a half hours. The rapid, collaborative response from Sui’s validator operators is an incredible testament to the strength of the Sui community and the enduring usability of the Sui network itself.”

As the investigation continues, the Sui community remains optimistic about the network’s resilience and usability, bolstered by the swift action taken during the outage.
