As per the latest report published by the NCA, multi-billion dollar money laundering networks were uncovered and 84 individuals were arrested as part of their operation. As per the blockchain analysis firm <a href="https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/nca-disrupts-multi-billion-dollar-russian-money-laundering-network-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Chainalysis report</a>, the NCA seized over 20 million Euros in cash and cryptocurrency as a result of its “Operation Destablise”.&nbsp;
The disruption of these billion dollar worth money laundering networks wouldn’t have been possible without the coordination of multiple global organizations. The U.K. Metropolitan Police Service, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and FBI, among others put in their efforts in uncovering the individuals behind these networks.

Both Smart and TGR are the major money laundering networks uncovered as part of Operation Destabilise. They facilitated funds through money laundering for crimes such as ransomware, espionage, drugs, etc. One of the arrested individuals includes Smart Network head Ekaterina Zhdanova, who was previously sanctioned by OFAC in 2023.&nbsp;
The Smart and TGR Networks operated across 30 countries and even served some Russian elites with illegal activities. The on-chain activity of these individuals give a clear picture of how the funds are laundered from crypto to cash and how they are used for crimes.&nbsp;
<a href="https://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/news/operation-destabilise-nca-disrupts-multi-billion-russian-money-laundering-networks-with-links-to-drugs-ransomware-and-espionage-resulting-in-84-arrests" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Operation Destabilise</a> started with an investigation of ransomware ransom payments on blockchain. It eventually led to uncovering of Smart and TGR, two major money laundering networks that are operating in advanced cybercrime methods, previously unknown methods to law enforcement.&nbsp;
Head of Cyber Intelligence at the NCA, Will Lyne says,&nbsp;

It not only demonstrates the capability of international organizations and their coordinated efforts when it comes to illegal financial crimes but also plays a crucial part in putting an end to other illegal networks across the globe.&nbsp;
