Today we are exploring the concept of decentralization as a core principle of cryptocurrency and blockchain transactions. When bitcoin became accessible to the world in 2009, it was branded as a universal digital currency never to be under the control of a select few. Blockchain itself was to serve as an immutable record, resistant to data corruption and ledger manipulation. Its belief that each block can never be edited or destroyed assured early adopters that this was a truly transparent currency, resistant to the inherent flaws of fiat and traditional accounting.Fast forward 10 years and cryptocurrency was no longer only available via obscure web platforms and peer to peer (P2P) transactions. The rise of the Centralized Exchange (CEX) meant crypto was available at the click of a button, garnering worldwide adoption at a rapidly accelerating pace. If you believe in the basic principle of cryptocurrency as a means of correcting a broken financial system, then surely any way to gain mass exposure is beneficial, right? But as we have seen, nothing this good comes without tremendous risk.A Centralized Exchange will purchase large amounts of various cryptocurrencies and allow for trading within their platforms, often attached to trading fees from which the bulk of their revenue is generated. Conversely, the Decentralized Exchange merely serves as an Automated Market Maker, connecting buyer and seller while performing pricing functions to match the interested parties. The DEX requires connection to a separate DeFi wallet, where users alone control access and security of its assets, whereas a CEX partitions its platform into sub-wallets for its users and maintains overall control of all assets. In essence, purchasing crypto on a CEX platform is the digital equivalent of an IOU. Aside from trading fees, these Centralized Exchanges have the ability to reinvest user funds into alternative investments and ventures that benefit the Exchange.For the uninitiated, I’d like to draw upon a simple albeit imperfect analogy; the apple farmer. A farmer may grow as many apples as their land will allow, and they may choose to sell said apples in a variety of ways. The most direct method would be to set up shop right at their farm and allow customers to purchase as many as they desire on sight. I can head to the farm, buy my apples, and take them home with me to do whatever I see fit (the DEX). On the other hand, the farmer may sell large amounts of apples to a distributor (the CEX), who maintains an order book for individual customers based on the premise that when they need their apples, they will be delivered. As you can imagine, several things can go wrong with this model. Perhaps the distributor decides to bake a few pies and venture into the pastry business, or perhaps they desire to trade some for oranges under the assumption that when the customer needs those apples, they can purchase more or tap into a reserve they accumulated. This model works well as long as the supply keeps pace with the demand, and all parties make good on their promises.In recent times, we have seen the mismanagement of user funds as the primary catalyst for the liquidity crisis. Unpaid loans and bad investments can wipe out a CEX’s liquidity, and without cash on reserve, the outcome is devastating. This recurring nightmare is what sparked the call to action for Robo Inu Finance to build and ultimately deploy its own DEX, RoboEx.
