Autonomys Network is a dedicated Layer-1 blockchain that utilizes a novel storage-based consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Archival-Storage (PoAS). Under this mechanism, consensus is decoupled from execution, and block production is governed by the availability of verifiable on-chain data. Participants—referred to as “farmers”—store provably unique, partial replicas of the blockchain’s history on commodity solid-state drives (SSDs). Their probability of producing the next block increases proportionally with the amount of verifiable historical data they store. This enforces the principle of "one-disk-one-vote" and provides a scalable, energy-efficient alternative to proof-of-work mining.
Development of Autonomys began with research in 2018, followed by active engineering in 2021. The mainnet consensus chain launched on November 6, 2024. The network currently operates with over 1,000 distributed storage nodes, collectively pledging more than 500 petabytes of storage capacity. The system is designed to maximize fault tolerance, decentralization, and data integrity by leveraging erasure-coded replication and content-addressed storage, ensuring that every piece of stored content is permanently accessible and tamper-resistant.
Unlike traditional storage networks that rely on off-chain pinning or third-party providers, Autonomys stores data directly within its consensus protocol. This enables true on-chain permanence and verifiability without additional trust assumptions. The native on-chain storage layer, known as the Distributed Storage Network (DSN), is accessible via user-friendly tools such as Auto Drive (a Web2-style dashboard), a fully documented RESTful API, and the TypeScript-based Auto SDK. The Auto-DAG data structure enables the efficient splitting, indexing, and verification of large files for storage within blockspace.
Autonomys is purpose-built to address the core limitations of decentralized storage, including sustainability, accessibility, and scalability. Its architecture eliminates the “farmer’s dilemma” found in proof-of-capacity models by economically incentivizing long-term storage rather than short-term performance. As more storage is pledged, the network becomes more fault-tolerant, the cost of storage decreases, and participation becomes more accessible.
The Autonomys protocol is optimized to support high-throughput, low-latency decentralized applications, including those in AI, agentic systems, and modular computation. By providing a permanent, trustless data availability layer at the consensus level, it enables new classes of decentralized applications that require continuous, immutable, and scalable access to historical data.
Autonomys continues to develop a comprehensive ecosystem around its core infrastructure, including developer tooling, tutorials, and governance primitives. The project remains committed to enabling a more secure, censorship-resistant, and inclusive foundation for decentralized storage and on-chain data-intensive applications.
