AyeAyeCoin is a historical cryptocurrency token, notable for being the first meme token on Ethereum. Named after the aye-aye, a nocturnal lemur native to Madagascar, it was deployed in August 2015, just three weeks after Ethereum's launch.
After deployment, AyeAyeCoin remained largely unnoticed for nearly nine years. All coins were initially held within a faucet contract which would dispense one free coin at a time for anyone willing to pay the gas fees.
In May 2024, the faucet was re-discovered, igniting a surge of interest as collectors and enthusiasts sought to claim a piece of blockchain history. Over the span of three days, the faucet was completely emptied as people rushed to obtain this "ancient" coin. In the final hours, when the faucet was nearly empty, the project was the top gas consumer on Ethereum.
Upon dispensing a coin, the faucet returned the message: "ayeAyeCoin love! One coin for you!" This phrase has since become a slogan for the coin and its collectors.
AyeAyeCoin has a total supply of 6 million coins. Due to the original contract design, AyeAyeCoin can only be transacted in whole units. In other words, it is "whole-coiners" only.
AyeAyeCoin predates the standardization of tokens on Ethereum. To enable trading on modern decentralized exchanges, the discoverer of AyeAyeCoin created an ERC-20 compliant wrapper. It is now traded on exchanges under the name Wrapped AyeAyeCoin (WAAC). Units of WAAC can be trustlessly unwrapped to the original AyeAyeCoin 1:1, and the wrapper contract has no special privileges over the coins.
The AyeAyeCoin community grew out of the NFT Relics discord chat, a group of enthusiasts devoted to researching and collecting early NFT projects and investigating early blockchain activity. There is no formal governance structure, the project's development and promotion are driven by the community. The original, pseudonymous contract deployer has not come forward.
Community efforts in support of the coin have led to large portions of WAAC liquidity being locked up for extended periods, and a major LP pledging to donate 20% of his ETH LP fees to aye-aye conservation organizations.
AyeAyeCoin pre-dates and presages the meme culture often associated with crypto, and holds a unique place in blockchain history. One coin for you!
