EigenLayer Research: Intelligent DeFi

DeFi + limitless trustless compute & data = Intelligent DeFi

EigenLayer's first piece on AVS Consumers: exploring the intersection of AVSs and finance onchain ↓

Glue & coprocessor architectures: enabling a general-purpose glue (the EVM) to write business logic & call coprocessors for specialized computation

EigenLayer AVSs are coprocessors: handling tasks too expensive or impractical for the Ethereum finite state machine

We previously explored Uni v4 hooks to discover: where can AVSs improve DeFi?   www.blog.eigenlayer.xyz/univ4-...

But that was only the beginning, let's explore more!

1. Auction to Redistribute MEV to AMM LPs

Problem: LPs lose money to arbitrageurs in the first swap every block.

Solution: Run a leaderless auction AVS to determine who gets the first swap through a pool in a block. Send auction proceeds to LPs > LPs give tighter spreads.

2. Advanced Margin System for Perp DEXs

Problem: Perp DEX margin systems are inflexible or centralized. Beta-neutral trading is hard.

Solution: Call a coprocessor AVS to run complex calculations or scenarios for margin factor. Give users more leverage, only liquidate as needed!

3. Personalized Loans via Account History

Problem: Lending platforms give bad loan terms to low-risk borrowers.

Solution: Anti-sybil with an identity solution. Create onchain liquidity profiles and use a coprocessor AVS to assess liquidation risk and give collateral factors.

4. Compliant Privacy Mixer

Problem: Tornado Cash enables money laundering and is OFAC-sanctioned.

Solution: Call a privacy layer AVS on deposits/withdrawals to only allow txns from compliant addresses - choose your own rules around OFAC-sanctions, hackers, and rate-limits.

Introducing Programmatic Incentives v1

The upcoming Programmatic Incentives v1 release, a new EigenLayer protocol feature, will enable weekly programmatic rewards of newly-minted EIGEN tokens to qualifying stakers and the Operators they delegate to.

These incentives will be retroactive based on staking since August 15, 2024, and will become claimable on a weekly basis starting in October 2024.

What

In the first year, Programmatic Incentives v1 will distribute ~66,945,866 EIGEN, equivalent to 4% of the EIGEN token’s initial supply of ~1,673,646,668 tokens.

3% will go to ETH and LST stakers and operators (ETH and LSTs are weighted equally). 1% will go to EIGEN stakers and operators.

Qualification

To receive Programmatic Incentives, Operators must be registered to at least one AVS and Stakers must be delegated to an operator that is registered to at least one AVS.

Claiming

Weekly programmatic rewards will be available to claim every Tuesday at 19:00 UTC. To see when claims will become available and further details on timeline, see the full blogpost linked below.

Why

This upcoming release marks a significant milestone for EigenLayer and the broader restaking ecosystem as EigenLayer transitions from retroactive incentives (points and stakedrops) towards continuous liquid rewards via Programmatic Incentives, ultimately creating a market for price discovery of shared security.

- Providing predictable rewards

- Subsidizing restaking marketplace

- Strengthening incentive alignment

Upon release of Programmatic Incentives v1 on mainnet, we will publish a followup blogpost with more details on technical implementation, claiming considerations, and links to supporting documentation and resources.

About EigenLayer

What is EigenLayer?

EigenLayer is a groundbreaking protocol that leverages the Ethereum blockchain to introduce a novel concept known as restaking. This innovative approach to cryptoeconomic security allows Ethereum stakers to reuse their staked ETH or Liquid Staking Tokens (LST) across various decentralized services within the EigenLayer ecosystem. By opting into EigenLayer smart contracts, stakers can extend the security of their staked assets to support additional applications on the network, thereby earning extra rewards for their contributions.

The primary motivation behind the development of EigenLayer is to address the fragmentation of security in the decentralized ecosystem. Traditionally, each new service on Ethereum has had to establish its own trust network, leading to a scattered security landscape. EigenLayer's solution enables services, regardless of their technical specifications, to access the collective security provided by Ethereum's stakers. This not only reduces the capital requirements for individual stakers but also enhances the overall trust and security for services tapping into this pooled resource.

EigenLayer's architecture is designed to facilitate a seamless interaction between stakers, operators, and services. Stakers can delegate their ETH to operators or choose to run validation services themselves, becoming operators in the process. This delegation is based on a mutual opt-in mechanism, ensuring that both parties agree to the terms of participation. Once delegated, stakers can select which Actively Validated Services (AVSs) they wish to support, contributing to the security and functionality of the network.

Operators play a crucial role in the EigenLayer ecosystem by running AVS software. These operators are responsible for performing validation tasks for AVSs, ensuring the integrity and reliability of the services offered to users. Through this collaborative effort, EigenLayer aims to foster an environment of permissionless innovation and free-market governance, where anyone can contribute to the security and development of decentralized services on Ethereum.

In summary, EigenLayer represents a significant advancement in the field of blockchain technology, offering a scalable and secure framework for enhancing the cryptoeconomic security of the Ethereum network. By enabling the restaking of ETH and LST, EigenLayer not only optimizes the utilization of staked assets but also promotes a more unified and robust security model for the decentralized ecosystem.
