Battle royale shooter game “Off the Grid” has become the top-grossing free-to-play title on the Epic Games Store since its release, competing with industry behemoths such as Fortnite and Rocket League.

The game, by Gunzilla Games and on the Avalanche blockchain, has seen much interest among both gamers and crypto communities since its early access release this past week.

By Friday, "Off the Grid" was leading Epic Games Store's Most Popular Free-to-Play PC Games list, rivaling and outmatching even those of Epic's blockbuster hits. The game's rapid rise to the top of the Trending list underlines its popularity among players.

"Off the Grid" follows the formula for battle royale: the players drop into a constantly shrinking map looking to scavenge, shoot, and survive. What adds an element of difference to that formula is the integration of blockchain technology. It's built on its own Avalanche subnet, with a GUN token and NFT-based in-game items expected soon.

On Twitch, "Off the Grid" is the most-watched game, of which 148,000 tuned into streams on Friday alone.

Despite its early success, "Off the Grid" is still in its infancy. The early access version currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC offers very limited content, offering only one map and mode. Although the in-game economy of Gun is denominated by GUN tokens, the full implementation of blockchain features such as NFT minting for rare weapons and items is yet to be realized.

A solid marketing push has helped fuel the game’s sudden popularity. Much of the gameplay footage that has spread on social media is tagged with #OTGpartner, meaning it is sponsored. Popular streamers such as Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag have streamed the game.
