Ethereum developers have successfully activated the Pectra upgrade on the Sepolia testnet.
Ethereum developers have successfully activated the Pectra upgrade on the Sepolia testnet, marking a significant step in the network’s progression toward its mainnet rollout, which is anticipated next month.
This activation occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. UTC and serves as the final major test phase before the upgrade is deployed on Ethereum's mainnet.
The Sepolia testnet is designed to simulate real network conditions, allowing developers to assess the upgrade's features and performance. Unlike its predecessor, the Holesky testnet, which encountered issues related to incorrect deposit contract addresses that delayed finality, Sepolia has achieved this critical milestone.
However, it faced challenges with a token-gated deposit contract, leading to transaction inclusion problems and empty blocks.
The Pectra upgrade is built upon the March 2024 Dencun hard fork, which aimed to reduce layer-2 transaction fees. This latest upgrade aims to improve Ethereum's scalability, security, and usability. Notable improvements include the introduction of EIP-7702, which facilitates account abstraction and enhances user experience in crypto wallets.
Developers plan to finalize the mainnet activation date during the upcoming All Core Developers (ACD) call on Thursday. A potential mainnet fork on Ethereum is intended for early April, continuing the network’s efforts to maintain competitiveness in the evolving blockchain landscape.
