Former British finance minister George Osborne has
joined cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase as a global advisor. Osborne, who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016, will join Coinbase's global advisory council, which provides strategic guidance as the company expands its global reach. He will collaborate with other council members, including Mark Esper, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Patrick Toomey (R-PA).
Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer, Faryar Shirzad, expressed excitement about Osborne's appointment, highlighting his diverse experience in business, journalism, and government. Shirzad expects Osborne's insights and experiences to be invaluable as Coinbase grows its global presence. Osborne's role at Coinbase will involve connecting the company with politicians and regulators to advocate for crypto-friendly regulations.
During his tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Osborne implemented various austerity policies to reduce the budget deficit. After completing his term, Osborne briefly served as editor-in-chief of London's Evening Standard newspaper and is currently a partner at Robey Warshaw LLP, a boutique investment bank.
Osborne's appointment comes amid Coinbase's aggressive expansion in Europe, obtaining licenses in multiple countries, including France, Spain, Singapore, and Bermuda. However, the company faces challenges in the United States, where the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accused it of violating securities laws.
