Documentary filmmaker Cullen Hoback’s latest documentary, slated to drop on October 8 on HBO, promises to take viewers through a "rollercoaster" to unmask the mysterious creator of Bitcoin: Satoshi Nakamoto.

Hoback, who came into the public eye with his HBO miniseries "Q: Into the Storm," in which he allegedly unmasked a number of the authors of the QAnon conspiracy theory, has now set his investigative sights on the world of cryptocurrency.

The filmmaker revealed on X that he had been "tracking down someone else who disappeared"—an apparent reference to the mysterious Bitcoin inventor.

The search for Satoshi Nakamoto has intrigued the cryptocurrency community since the figure was last known to be active, in December 2010. In the years since then, a number of candidates have been put forward, and even the possible involvement of the FBI in unmasking Nakamoto has remained cloaked in intrigue, with the agency neither confirming nor denying the existence of a dossier on the Bitcoin creator.

Of the most bizarre incidents related to this mystery was computer scientist Craig Wright, who claimed that he was Satoshi Nakamoto, but in sworn testimony retracted his claim. This is the kind of incident that has furthered intrigue in regard to Bitcoin's origins.

The unmasking of Nakamoto could have far-reaching implications for the financial world. Bitcoin, currently valued at $60,480, has grown from a relatively obscure digital experiment into a global financial phenomenon valued at almost $1.2 trillion.
