The bans mean that cryptocurrencies are now one of the few payment options left.
Mastercard and Visa have announced that their credit and debit cards can no longer be used to make purchases on Pornhub.
Earlier this week, Pornhub said it was implementing new measures to ensure that illegal content wouldn’t appear on its platform. However, both Mastercard and Visa decided to launch their own investigation in the wake of the newspaper’s findings.
Pornhub has said it is “extremely disappointed” with the decision as it affects the livelihoods of “hundreds of thousands” of models.
Last year, PayPal announced that it would no longer allow its services to be used for paying the site’s models — prompting Pornhub to begin accepting cryptocurrencies including Tether and Bitcoin.
The latest announcements mean that cryptocurrencies are one of the few choices that customers have if they want to purchase premium content on the platform, which was visited 42 billion times in 2019.
