Solana-based MMO "Star Atlas," developed by ATMTA, is targeting a launch by the end of 2025. The game, which has been in development since 2020, is set to feature an open-world, intergalactic universe where players can form factions and trade assets like space vessels and crew members. ATMTA's current offering, the browser game "Golden Era," launched in 2023, has only about 1,500 daily active users, marking a decline in Star Atlas user numbers which peaked at around 20,000 in 2022.

Michael Wagner, CEO of ATMTA, expressed that the goal is to release the core mechanics of the full AAA game by the end of the year. He acknowledged the challenges of predicting exact release dates but remained optimistic about the progress. The game is being built using Unreal Engine 5 to provide cinematic-quality visuals, with the long-term goal of producing a game that will engage a broader audience. A test version is available on Epic Games Store, and the game's Discord community has grown to over 177,000 members.

Despite the setbacks, such as the collapse of FTX in 2022, which trapped $15 million in capital for ATMTA, the company has managed to remain afloat by generating revenue through digital asset and token sales. Wagner stated that ATMTA had generated more than $220 million in revenue from its various streams over the past few years. While the value of the ATLAS token has significantly declined from its 2021 peak, the company remains self-sufficient without relying on venture capital. ATMTA’s revenue comes from its digital ecosystem, which includes the sale of in-game assets, and Wagner takes pride in the company's ability to generate income without external investment.
Web3 gaming has faced challenges, with many players becoming disillusioned with the space. Wagner pointed to the success of simpler games like "Axie Infinity" but emphasized that ATMTA’s focus is on releasing a high-quality AAA game that can push the "Star Atlas" ecosystem forward. To support this vision, ATMTA has invested in Shaga, a decentralized cloud gaming platform designed to improve gaming performance by using local gaming PCs to minimize latency.

While the game's user numbers have dropped, Wagner remains optimistic that the release of the AAA title will revitalize the “Star Atlas” universe. The company has made significant strides in building a strong community and technological foundation, even amid tough market conditions. However, without the release of a high-quality MMO, the future of the "Star Atlas" ecosystem remains uncertain.
