A newly proposed overhaul of Ethereum's consensus layer has sparked debate in the crypto community, with supporters defending its lengthy implementation timeline from critics who warn of competitive risks. The Beam Chain proposal, which Ethereum researcher Justin Drake introduced, promises big upgrades to scalability and security but isn't expected to launch until ays prominent network contributor cygaar in defense of the cautious approach. "It is the second-largest blockchain in the world with 60B in TVL, an underlying asset worth 400B, and thousands of apps dependent on it."
This would set 2025 for specification agreement, 2026 for production coding, and the years between 2027 and 2029 for exhaustive testing.
However, proponents argue this timeline is a result of necessary precautions for a network of Ethereum's scale. Such an upgrade requires complete rewrites of core network functionality, including changes to three-slot finality and chain snarkification. As cygaar says, "The worst possible scenario is for a bug/exploit to be introduced in these changes, causing millions of people to lose money."
