Pornhub now only accepts cryptocurrencies after Visa and Mastercard blocked its credit and debit cards from being used to purchase premium subscriptions.

The adult website informs users that credit cards cannot currently be accepted at the moment — directing customers to use digital assets such as Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and Litecoin instead.

A number of privacy coins, including Monero and Zcash, are also accepted.

Pornhub’s change of payment methods follows a damning New York Times investigation that found illegal content was being hosted on the site — including videos that were taken without consent, and some that appeared to show people who were underage.

The company says it has been taking down content uploaded by unverified users in response to the newspaper’s allegations, yet criticized Visa and Mastercard for the action they have taken. In a statement, Pornhub said:

“It is clear that Pornhub is being targeted not because of our policies and how we compare to our peers, but because we are an adult content platform.”

With adoption levels still relatively low as a percentage of the population, it remains to be seen whether subscription purchases on the website will take a hit now cryptocurrencies are the only payment method.
