Ethereum’s Dencun Upgrade Could Happen Next Year

The deployment of Ethereum's Deneb-Cancun (Dencun) upgrade, aimed at addressing scalability issues, may face a potential delay until early next year. Concerns were raised by core developers during an Ethereum consensus-layer meeting, as the upgrade has not yet been introduced on public testnets.
Tim Beiko from the Ethereum Foundation expressed that if Dencun is not launched on a public testnet before the November 2023 Devconnect conference, the mainnet activation might not happen this year. The readiness of software code, testing on public testnets, and preparedness of client teams will determine the mainnet deployment.

Currently, the upgrade is in the "devnet phase." Core developers mentioned the upcoming testing on a localized developer network called "Devnet 9" before transitioning to the public testnet phase.

Dencun's execution layer, named Cancun, and consensus layer, named Deneb, together form the Deneb-Cancun upgrade. The upgrade includes the highly anticipated Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844, also known as proto-danksharding, which aims to enhance scalability and reduce transaction costs on Layer 2 rollup solutions such as Arbitrum and Optimism.
