A music album that's being released as a non-fungible token could end up racing to the top of the British charts.

Muse have announced that they're releasing their ninth record — Will Of The People — as an NFT later this month.

They've partnered up with the Web3 marketplace Serenade to offer a "digital pressing," and for the first time, it'll be eligible to enter the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart.

It's important to stress that Will Of The People will still be available to purchase as an old-fashioned CD, vinyl or cassette.

And while it's true that albums previously released as NFTs could have been eligible for the charts, Muse's record is the first one with a real chance of doing so.

It's hoped that the NFT version of the album will "cater for a superfan's appetite for scarcity, exclusive content and community recognition."

And alongside the usual perks of verifiable ownership and the freedom to be sold on secondary markets, Muse will end up receiving royalties every time one of these NFTs changes hands.

The Official Charts Company says that it's "always strived to move with the times" — and take into account the new ways that music is being consumed. Chief executive Martin Talbot added:

"We will be delighted when the first album delivered as an NFT contributes to the chart, with Serenade and Muse leading the way this summer. NFTs are a new, exciting format, the potential for which is only just beginning to be explored and I am sure will play a part in the Official Charts for years to come."
