North Korean Lazarus Group May Be Involved In The CoinEx Hack

Evidence suggests that the recent security breach at CoinEx exchange, resulting in an estimated $54 million worth of tokens being stolen, may be linked to North Korean attackers involved in a previous crypto exploit. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT has revealed data pointing to the involvement of the notorious North Korean hacker group Lazarus.

The hackers targeted multiple wallets on the exchange, taking advantage of flaws in security to steal ETH, XRP, TRX, MATIC, SOL, KDA, and XDAG tokens. CoinEx discovered over ten suspicious addresses on various networks, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum, where stolen tokens were transferred.

ZachXBT's examination of the wallets reveals a link to a $41 million exploit on the cryptocurrency betting platform Stake earlier this month, which was also linked to Lazarus. One of the CoinEx addresses received funds straight from the Stake attacker. These findings point to the North Korean organization being involved in the CoinEx attack.

CoinEx assured consumers that the stolen funds were a minor part of their total holdings and that all remaining assets on the exchange were safe. Despite the attack, CoinEx has continued to operate, facilitating more than $22 million in trade volume across 730 trading pairs in the previous 24 hours, according to current data.
