Farm Frens has postponed its FREN token airdrop, originally scheduled for January, to February. The delay comes in response to recent changes in Telegram's policy regarding mini apps that integrate cryptocurrency functionalities.
The developers cited "unreasonable deadlines" imposed by Telegram and The Open Network (TON) as a primary reason for the shift in their timeline. According to a statement from the Farm Frens team on social media, they were caught off guard by the announcement mandating that all Telegram mini apps must exclusively utilize the TON blockchain.
This requirement, they noted, was accompanied by heavy restrictions and a short transition period.
Farm Frens emphasized the lack of prior notification about this exclusivity agreement, which they described as a "surprise" that necessitated significant adjustments to their roadmap. Despite the challenges, the developers have chosen to continue with the launch of their token on the Base layer-2 network, created by Coinbase, rather than conforming to the new TON requirements.
In a statement, TON Foundation president Manuel Stotz reiterated the necessity for mini apps to adopt the TON blockchain to maintain a scalable and secure user experience that aligns with Telegram’s standards.
Projects that migrate to TON within 30 days may qualify for grants of up to $50,000, contingent on audience size and prior support from Telegram.
Farm Frens plans to remove on-chain interactions from its game for the foreseeable future and aims to develop its wallet as a standalone application.
The game enables users to manage a farm and earn rewards in the form of the forthcoming FREN token, which will also be available to owners of NFTs linked to the studio's upcoming tower defense game, Everseed. A final snapshot for the airdrop was taken on Jan. 20.
