Bitcoin.org Taken Over By Giveaway Scam

A website that was one of the first to host the Bitcoin whitepaper has been compromised by scammers.

Bitcoin.org’s homepage was taken over with a giveaway scam.

Those who saw the message were invited to send Bitcoin to an address in order to receive twice as much crypto back.

Data from Blockchain.com revealed that the address in question received about 0.4 BTC — worth about $17,616 at the time of writing.
Most of these funds had now been withdrawn, leaving a balance of just $1.51.

This is far less than the proceeds generated through similar scams — and this could be linked to how Namecheap temporarily disabled the domain after being notified.

It’s the latest in a long line of mishaps for Bitcoin.org.

Over the summer, it fell victim to a “massive” distributed denial of service attack — and was ordered to pay a ransom of 0.5 BTC by hackers.

Also this year, the site was forced to take down the Bitcoin.org whitepaper in the U.K. after Craig Wright, an entrepreneur who claims he invented BTC, took the project to court over allegations of copyright infringement.
