Sony Group's blockchain subsidiary has officially launched the "Minato" testnet for its Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, Soneium.
This launch is supported by Astar Network, a blockchain platform known for its multi-chain capabilities. Astar Network will provide initial liquidity and a variety of fungible and non-fungible digital assets during the testnet phase, setting the stage for a robust development ecosystem.
Sony's venture into blockchain technology, particularly with the upcoming Soneium network, demonstrates the company’s commitment to exploring new frontiers in digital infrastructure. While the association with a global brand like Sony is likely to attract interest from developers and users, the true impact of Soneium will depend on the traction it gains in the competitive blockchain space.
With 900 million Sony devices in active use worldwide and a vast entertainment ecosystem that includes movies, television, music, and the PlayStation Network, Sony is well-positioned to leverage its global reach to promote Soneium.
To further drive development on Soneium, Sony has introduced the Soneium Spark program, an incubation initiative designed to provide developers with the tools and support they need to build on the new blockchain. The program offers infrastructure access, mentorship, and opportunities for industry partnerships, with the goal of accelerating growth on the Soneium network.
Eligible developers can secure investments of up to $100,000 to build on the Minato testnet, with additional funding opportunities available through the program's partner network. In addition to financial support, developers will benefit from the expertise of industry leaders such as Circle, Optimism, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink, who are all involved in supporting the Spark program.
