Ramaswamy Leaves DOGE, Setting Sights on Ohio Governor Race With Musk Remaining in Charge

Vivek Ramaswamy announced on Jan. 20 that he will step down from his role as co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he worked alongside Elon Musk.

Ramaswamy's departure comes as he prepares to run for governor of Ohio, according to multiple media reports, including CBS News and The New York Times.

In a post on X, Ramaswamy expressed his confidence in Musk and the DOGE team, stating, “I’m confident that Elon and the team will succeed in streamlining government.” He did not provide further details about his gubernatorial campaign but indicated that he would share more information soon. Ramaswamy has previously affirmed his support for President Donald Trump.

DOGE, established through executive orders signed by Trump, aims to reduce federal spending by implementing budget cuts and staff reductions.

Ramaswamy played a significant role in its creation, as noted by DOGE spokesperson Anna Kelly, who confirmed that his candidacy requires him to step away from the organization.

The exit follows reported tensions between Ramaswamy and Musk, with Politico citing sources who claim Musk sought Ramaswamy's removal. A Republican strategist mentioned that Ramaswamy's recent criticisms of American culture may have contributed to the decision.

Ramaswamy’s move to enter the Ohio gubernatorial race comes as incumbent Governor Mike DeWine's second term is set to conclude in January 2027.

His potential candidacy was hinted at in a recent post in which he responded positively to a suggestion from a parody account regarding a run for governor.

DOGE is currently facing legal challenges from consumer advocacy groups alleging violations of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, raising concerns about transparency and oversight in government decision-making.
