Reports suggest the victims of REvil's ransomware attack are now struggling to get their systems back online.
The REvil group appears to have vanished from the dark web — a couple of weeks after staging one of the biggest ransomware attacks in history.
It comes days after U.S. President Joe Biden urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to take action against the cybercriminals.
REvil has been linked to an attack that affected the operations of one of the world’s largest beef producers.
And over the Independence Day weekend at the start of this month, it infiltrated the systems of Kaseya, which had a knock-on effect on an estimated 1,500 businesses.
Supermarkets and train networks were affected, leaving consumers unable to pay for their groceries and buy rail tickets.

Problems Emerge
Unfortunately, REvil’s disappearance could be bad news for the victims who are currently battling to get their systems back online.
GroupSense, a digital risk protection company, was attempting to negotiate with the cybercriminals on behalf of a law firm that was affected by the latest attack. Its chief executive Kurtis Minder told The New York Times:
“What’s the plan for the victims?”
It is possible that neither the U.S. and Russia didn’t have anything to do with REvil disappearing. It’s possible that the ransomware group may have bitten off more than it can chew — or was concerned about the fallout from this wide-reaching attack.
One thing that is highly likely is that the hackers will simply regroup under a new name. And that means the threat of ransomware hasn’t subsided for businesses.
