It's a big deal — but the $11,550 windfall is a drop in the ocean given the striker has a net worth of $500 million.
Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly become the first footballer in the world to be rewarded with cryptocurrency based on his performance.
The Portuguese soccer sensation, who currently plays for Juventus, recently scored the 770th goal of his career — breaking Pele’s record of 767.
To celebrate, Ronaldo has been gifted 770 JUV, the Italian club’s official fan token, which is based on the Chiliz blockchain.
Although this will be a drop in the ocean for the striker, who has an estimated net worth of about $500 million, it’s still a big milestone in the relationship between sport and crypto — and could result in new forms of remuneration emerging in the future.
More Soccer Clubs Get Involved
Ronaldo has also played for Portugal’s national team in his storied career, as well as Manchester United and Real Madrid.
And now, one of United’s bitter rivals is also getting involved in crypto.
Last Friday, it was announced that Manchester City have launched the $CITY token through Socios.com, giving fans the chance to access VIP rewards, exclusive features and promotions, and vote on club polls.
Although these tokens are fungible in nature (meaning that each one isn’t unique,) Manchester City are set to launch digital collectibles in the future — piggybacking off an exciting new trend kickstarted by the likes of NBA Top Shot.
